How To Write A Good CV

Author: CV Phoenix

This article describes how to write a good CV, regarding the philosophy of how to approach creating the CV and tips on what to include and how to communicate it.
A CV is a sales document; it conveys succinctly the information of what you are looking for and why. Why you are qualified for such work and a story as to how you got to this point, covering your previous work experience, education, qualifications and interests.
I believe a CV should be a succinct story backing up a tag line about yourself. Often in interviews the main asked of the candidate is:
'Tell me about yourself'
This answer and the CV to back it up should be made as succinct, clear and relevant as possible to the position sought.
Obviously life is not as clear and simple as this and many of us have a complicated and confusing history in regards to work experience, education and life story, but effort should be made to make this as clear as possible in interview and on the CV. To present only the relevant facts to sell you most effectively for the post in which you are applying.
Profile
The profile should be a short sentence stating clearly:
  • What work you are looking for
  • What you have to offer (why you are qualified)
I believe in starting the CV with a profile. This explains to the employer or recruiter what you are looking for and summarises all of the attributes that can be found in detail on the rest of your CV.
The recruiter will know what they are looking for and if your profile states this in summary then you are making their job a lot easier and they are more likely to put you in the 'yes' pile, as they quickly check a large volume of CVs.
Remember the recruiter is human too, think how frustrating it is when you look at a website that is not clear and it is hard to find the information you need quickly. Now think of the recruiter who has to look through a large volume of CVs for any advertised positions, if they have to look at a large number and it takes too long for them to find the information they need from your CV they may not take the time to do so.
Work Experience
Work experience should come directly after the profile in reverse chronological order.
The first thing a recruiter or prospective employer will look at is the last job you have had and if you had the relevant experience or achieved something relevant to the job you are applying for in previous roles.
Do them and yourself a favour and put this experience where they can find it easily. I.e. your most recent job at the top and your previous roles below this.
There will always be gaps and times when you worked for a short time, temping, travelling etc. It is your call as to how to include these but remember your story needs to be made as clear as possible, so if you worked somewhere for a short time then make the story relevant as to why or consider omitting some jobs altogether. Maybe include one line with the dates and mention what happened, e.g. temping role, or went travelling between these dates etc. This answers the question quicker than leaving gaps and having to explain them in interview.
Education
Education should be also in reverse chronological order.
Other Qualifications
If you have attended any training courses or have industrial qualifications they should be entered here. Remember this is a sales document – list everything you have done here – sell yourself!
Interests
Qualify your hobbies and interests. Do not mention generic things such as ‘I like to go running\' without qualifying it as to what has been achieved. For example, it would be better to say: 'I am part of the Harriers running club' - or 'I recently completed the Great North Run'
Good luck!

Parenting tips to help young children love to read

(BPT) - Children are energetic learners, trying to make sense of the world around them. One of the most
important activities to help a child stretch his mind, especially in the early years, is reading. From birth to age 5, development in all areas of the brain is rapid, so it is especially important during this time that parents make an intentional effort to integrate reading into a child's daily routine. This practice helps mold your child into an active reader and establishes the foundational literacy skills he needs for future success in school and life.

"The first five years of life offer a critical window for brain development and learning," said Anne-Marie Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Reach Out and Read, an evidence-based, national nonprofit whose pediatricians promote early literacy and school readiness to 4 million children nationwide. By reading aloud and talking to their children from birth, parents can play a key role in helping their little ones develop essential foundational language skills and eventually, arrive at kindergarten ready to read, learn, and succeed. Learning does not begin on the first day of school; it begins in the home with engaged parents who take the time to share stories, words, and a love of reading with their children."

The economic impact of literacy

While picking up a book and reading to your child may seem like a simple act, many children miss this benefit. A 3-year-old child's vocabulary should span about 600 words with 80 percent intelligibility. This means that a person who has not previously heard this child speak can understand eight out of 10 words. Providing children with a solid foundation in literacy skills not only equips them to thrive in the 21st Century, it also impacts our country's ability to compete in the global workplace.

"The future of our children and our country depend on coordinated community efforts to prepare all students in the U.S. to excel in a dynamic, global society," says Jo Kirchner, president and CEO of Primrose Schools, a family of more than 270 private preschools across the country. "Together we have a responsibility to step up to the challenge by pooling our knowledge, time, expertise and ideas to improve early literacy and education outcomes."

Raising a reader

As you read aloud to your child, keep these tips in mind to maximize your reading time together:

* Start early. Begin reading and speaking to your child the day she is born - it is never too early to start.

* Practice every day. Make reading with your child a daily routine, reinforcing the development of language and literacy skills.

* Serve and return. A key part of language learning occurs in "conversations" with our children. After a baby listens to people around her talking for a few months, she begins to respond with her own rendition of those sounds, starting with coos, babbles, or shrieks. Dr. Jack Shonkoff of the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University calls this back-and-forth interaction "serve and return." As we "serve" words, children "return" sounds. Before we realize, the child is beginning to speak intelligibly and meaningfully - first with syllables and single words, then with phrases and complete sentences. Use "serve and return" when reading together as your child starts to learn about story background and context.

* Play word games. Letter puzzles, rhyming games, breaking words into sounds, and other phonological play helps your child build a foundation that will later be used to decode words.

* Have a conversation. While you are reading a book with your child, engage in conversation about the characters, the plot, the setting, and ask your child questions. This offers him an opportunity to build his vocabulary and comprehension skills.

* Pick books at the appropriate reading level. When your child is reading to you, pick books that have words that your child is familiar with - repetition is one of the best ways to learn. Books at or just below your child's reading level allow her to work on fluency and build confidence. When you are reading to your child, pick books at a higher reading level so that your child hears new words in context first, before being presented with the challenge of reading them himself.

* Wait before interrupting. Rather than correcting your child mid-sentence, wait until he comes to a comfortable stopping point and then go back to the trouble spot to talk it out together. Stopping your child to correct him each time he makes a mistake can erode his confidence.

"How Do I Find Love" 6 Tips for Finding True Love

Each month about 5 million men and women ask that same question, "how do I find love?"

Worldwide, it is estimated that 358 million people ask themselves the same question. Imagine that. The
reason is obvious.

Finding true lasting love can be challenging and even discouraging. In March of 2013, Dr. in Psychology asked. "When two people meet, how can they find assurance that they have found their true love".

The answer given her was exactly what she had in mind. It is hope that by the time you are done reading this article, you will never ask yourself how you will find love again. The truth is that lasting love is available to everyone, including you and the purpose of this article is to help you make this dream come true.

In the process, you may be asked to do things that are out of your comfort zone. This is not to make you feel uneasy. The intention is to help you take the required steps that will help you find true love so that you do not have to keep asking yourself "how do I find love".

Finding love is just like anything that is important to you. You just need the right information. Information is power. And putting the information into practice is what will help you learn how to find love. Here are 6 steps to start with:

1. Start out by finding the right match for you. Love relationships fail because the two people in it are not right for each other. How do you know when you have found the right partner for you? I will answer this question by finishing off what the radio host said, "People, listen to your intuition." Her tone sounded as though she was pleading with the listeners. Your Intuition is the key. Here is why. Intuition is defined as 'to reveal'. In other words, when you are with the right person, ask your intuition if he or she is "the one" and your intuition will tell you.

2. Include a higher power because it works and the result will be much faster. What I mean by that is, if you have been asking yourself how do I find love that will last, you can have what you desire if you listen to your intuition. In other words when you meet someone you are interested in, get confirmation that both of you BELONG TOGETHER. A bolt is made to fit a certain nut. Once brought together, they remain tight forever because they are made for each other and so are two people made for each other.

3. Add what is missing. No love relationship on the planet comes with everything it needs to work perfectly. Add what is missing to the love relationship.

4. Women and men want lovers that are also their best friend. Be each other best friend and look out for each other.

5. Put together a success plan to break-up proof the relationship or marriage.

6. Lastly, do not just settle for anyone or go into a relationship out of loneliness, desperation or lust.

In addition, it is important to ask yourself how does going into a relationship with a love interest give you what you want. There is a reason for that. If you are seeing someone and the person treats you in a way that makes you happy and meets your needs, you will become happy in the relationship and naturally fall in love.

That is how you find love and fall in love. There is no reason why you should ask yourself how do I find love. You can make it happen.

The First Step To Being Yourself Is To Know Yourself

Are you living your life the way you want to?  Remember, the first step to being yourself is to know yourself.

Are you living your life the way you want to?  Before you switch to autopilot and say yes... pause and think about that question.  Are you living your life the way you really want to?  If you can honestly say yes, I congratulate you!  Yet, if you are one of many who hang their head and say "No, I'm not" then I am happy to tell you that can change.

You're not alone.  I have worked with women who went to school for a degree they weren't even interested in just because their parents insisted.  I have worked with women who got married to a man they didn't love just because it was expected of them by their families.  I have worked with women who had no idea what it was they wanted, but knew they are tremendously unhappy with who they became and where they were in their lives.

This is common because most women like to please.  And if you are anything like I used to be, not pleasing someone else is so painful that you just don't let it happen.  Yet, who suffers when you are not even trying to please yourself?  You are!

First, you need to understand you are entitled to have the life you want; a life which is agreeable to you and supports you and your desires.  You just have to take the action to get it.
Image courtesy of [Ambro] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

The first step is a matter of knowing who you are.  And that might be really hard especially if you have been pretending to be someone else because you don't even know who you are or what you want.

So, get to know who you are.  Who are you when you are being your true, authentic self?  Seems easy on the surface, right?  Not necessarily.  In order to work toward getting to know you-to really know yourself-spend quiet time alone with paper and pen to answer the following questions (schedule this on your calendar if you have to):

    What makes me smile?
    What excites me?
When do I feel the most joy?
    What makes me feel good?
What are my favorite hobbies or past-times?
What am I really good at doing?

Don't hold back your answers.  Let them flow.  This is for you!   However, if you feel that you are holding back, it is a telltale sign you are possibly afraid you will be judged by others.  Stop!  This is what got you in this position in the first place; it only leads to you behaving like someone else.

So now you have your true answers to the questions above.  Think about how it would feel if you pursued them and didn't have any fear of being judged or questioned.  (Yes, you can do this. You must do this in order to have the life you really want!)

You would feel great, happy, free, liberated, justified, excited about life and maybe many other feelings, too!  And ultimately... you would now know the real you, right?

Remember, the first step to being yourself is to know yourself.  And just like when you meet someone new whose company you enjoy and want to know more about them... getting to know yourself is like gaining a new best friend.

Self Help Tips On How To Start A Conversation With Someone Of The Opposite Gender

Author: Chia Ti Wah
Do you need self help tips on how to talk to someone of the opposite gender? This can be quite a problem
especially for people who are shy or lack social confidence. Here are some pointers that you may want to take note of.
Image courtesy of [nuttakit] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Self Help Tips – Don't Worry
You need to remember that the people of the opposite gender are human beings after all. The person whom you may want to talk to could be feeling just as shy as you are. Do not worry about what the other person will think about you. All you need to do is take a deep breath and pretend that that person is already your friend. Talk to him or her as a friend, not a stranger. It may take some practice at first. The key is to feel comfortable under your own skin and then feel to comfortable with the person.

Self Help Tips – Believe In Yourself
Speaking of feeling comfortable with yourself, it is very difficult to feel comfortable with yourself if you do not believe in yourself. There are a lot of reasons why you may not believe in yourself. It could be because you have been bullied in the past and people called you derogatory and insulting names. Or it could be because you have low self esteem or inferiority complex. Whatever the case may be, you have to break out of that problem, otherwise you will be a slave to it for the rest of your life. Believe in who you are, and love yourself the way you are. There is only one you in the world. No one else can be you as good as you are.

Self Help Tips – Look For Opportunities
It was once said that the go-getters are the ones who win in life. That can be true in this context. If you see an opportunity to talk to someone of the opposite gender, then please grab that opportunity. Even if you make a mistake by saying something inappropriately because you were nervous, know that at least you had the courage to take action, and you can only get better which each opportunity you take. Life will present you with many opportunities, so do keep a lookout for them.
I hope you have benefited from these self help tips on how to talk to someone from the opposite gender. Practice makes perfect, so be sure to work on these pointers consistently.

How to Be Organised? Tips to Get Organised

Author: Daniel J. Hill (D-Funkdafied)
Disorganisation is something you should really avoid throughout your whole life. But, the most important times to be organised are when you really need to relieve a lot of stress, save time and to feel better. Being well-organised is an essential quality to have during your exam period in school and further education. Your adult life will also need to be well-organised especially if you\'re an employee or an entrepreneur that actually wants to make an honest living and become successful. Or, maybe you just want to be organised for general and personal reasons. Either way, this article will help you understand the meanings of being well-organised and how to achieve it, CORRECTLY.
1.      Make sure you stay focused and keep your eye on the clock. Especially when it comes to schedules, deadlines and appointments. Most people seem to get lost by focusing on something else and then they forget and lose track of time. This is what causes people to be late when they need to be certain places.
2.      Don\'t do too many things at once unless you actually are good at 'multi-tasking'.Think about what tasks you need to tackle first and check your to-do list (if you haven\'t a to-do list then I suggest working on it). If you go overboard by trying to get tasks done in one go. You will end up rushing your duties, and then you will not have a top-quality outcome.

3.      Analyse your space. Look around your living area, office, bedroom or even garage and evaluate all the important junk that needs to be organised. Start cleaning up the disorganised mess, never leave it there and hope it will just go away on its own. Have you ever lost something you need and could never find it? General tidying up may uncover some lost items and information that you are surprised to actually find.
4.      What makes you so disorganised? Think about the different reasons you may not be well-organised and understand why. Is it because you have a lack of interest in what needs to be done, or is it laziness, lack of time, or do you see no point at all? You will need to give yourself strength to overcome your bad habits.
5.      Understand the outcome and push yourself. What do I mean by 'understand the outcome'? The meaning of this is to actually plan ahead which will help you to recognise how good you will feel overtime when becoming organised. You will feel less stressed, aggravated and annoyed, for a start. Also, you may be able to get things done on a tight schedule so you can do other tasks or give yourself free time in the long run.

6.      Recap your to-do list. Like I said before, if you haven\'t got a to-do list then I suggest you start creating one and thanks to good ole\' technology, you don\'t have to use a physical notepad. Just write down your to-do list on your computer and you can easily remove the task you have completed. Keep in touch with your to-do list, you need to check it every day to see what you need to do next. Instead of just playing on the Xbox or PlayStation, look at your list and see what NEEDS TO BE DONE.
7.      Stay motivated. Even when you get into the habit of being more organised and prepared, you will most likely have one of those days where you really can\'t be bothered, I know because I occasionally feel the same way. But that\'s okay as long as you don\'t continue like it. Just don\'t go overboard otherwise you will feel drained. I hope this has helped! Here is another article regarding Self-Motivation.

The Top 5 Classic Self-Help Books

By: John Rivera

Every year there are dozens of self-help books published in the US. Some are read and soon forgotten and eventually go out of print while others go on to become classics. A classic book is a book accepted as being exemplary or noteworthy and has stood the test of time. This is a list of what I consider to be the best self-help book classics.

5. It Works by RHJ

Though not as well-known as the other books on this list, Roy Herbert Jarrett known as R. H. J. authored the little book entitled "IT Works!" published in 1926. "IT Works!" outlined a simple, workable procedure for obtaining one's heart's desires by focus of thought power. The simple, powerful procedure to obtain whatsoever one desires, by right thinking, has brought happiness and fulfillment to many as they learned how to focus their thoughts. Virtually all books on goal setting and mind control published since "It Works!" have followed the same basic ideas. And nothing exceeds imitation for proof of validity!

4. The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason

The Richest Man in Babylon is a book by George Samuel Clason which gives financial advice through a collection of parables set in ancient Babylon. Through their experiences in business and managing household finance, the characters in the parables learn simple lessons in financial wisdom. Originally, a series of separate informational pamphlets distributed by banks and insurance companies, the pamphlets were bound together and published in book form in 1926. The most important idea in the book is this: "A part of all you earn is yours to keep" meaning you should save a tenth of all you make to invest, doing so will make you wealthy. Modern writers have adopted this idea most notably David L. Bach best known for his Automatic Millionaire Series of motivational financial books.

3. The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles

The Science of Getting Rich is a book written by the New Thought Movement writer Wallace D. Wattles and published in 1910 by the Elizabeth Towne Company. The book is still in print after 100 years. It was a major inspiration for Rhonda Byrne's bestselling book and film The Secret (2006). According to USA Today, the text is "divided into 17 short, straight-to-the-point chapters that explain how to overcome mental barriers, and how creation, not competition, is the hidden key to wealth attraction." The Science of Getting Rich preceded similar financial success books such as The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel (1912) and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (1937). In the 100 years since its publication, it has gone through many editions, and remains in print from more than one publisher.

2. The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

Not a book but a recording of a weekly pep talk given to Nightingales sales force, he owned an insurance agency at the time, The Strangest Secret, earned the first Gold Record for the spoken word, with sales exceeding 1 million copies. Nightingale, known as the 'dean of personal development,' reveals how he discovered and lived the secret to success. Nightingale partnered with Vic Conant to market the recording due to popular demand for it and is also credited with starting the self-help/personal development field.

1. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Considered by many to be the greatest self-help book ever published, Hill’s Think and Grow Rich first published in 1937, is the end product of two decades of research conducted by Napoleon Hill. His research started when Andrew Carnegie (the steel tycoon who was then the richest man on earth) gave him the assignment of organizing a Philosophy of Personal Achievement. Hill, who was a poor journalist, armed with just an introductory letter from Carnegie, set out to interview over five hundred successful people including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, John D. Rockefeller, George Eastman, William Wrigley Jr. and Charles M. Schwab. Hill then revealed the priceless wisdom of his research in the form of the thirteen steps to success (in Think and Grow Rich) and the seventeen principles of success (in courses and lectures he conducted).

John Rivera is a professional blogger having been blogging since blogging was in its infancy. John has always had an insatiable curiosity about the world ever since he can remember. Always asking why, John was attracted to self-help books from an early age become a voracious reader in the process. He currently blog about self-help books at The Self-help Books Guide. He has a degree in Philosophy.
